We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that employees primarily work from their Applied Intuition office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced tech transactions attorney to join our legal team. This is a uniquely strategic role with a mix of both internal and external-facing responsibilities in a region of increasing importance and growth for Applied Intuition. In short, this role will make an impact. You will primarily support Sales, Product, and Engineering. You will also have opportunities to expand your role as part of a small legal team in a high growth start up, and as our first attorney in Asia.

Our ideal candidate is a business-minded lawyer who is focused on execution, prepared to lead on important deals, and comfortable making thoughtful and creative decisions. The role will require a high degree of self-sufficiency but also someone who enjoys being part of a supportive team dedicated to providing top legal service to our internal clients. You must be willing to roll up your sleeves and be comfortable working in ambiguity.

At Applied Intuition, you will:

  • Lead the drafting, structuring, and negotiating of complex commercial contracts with a diverse range of customers and partners from automotive OEMs, Autonomous Vehicle (AV) startups, and other players in the automotive and mobility ecosystems.
  • Be a trusted advisor to the leadership team on legal matters critical to the growth of the business.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders (e.g., Sales,Finance, Product, Engineering, etc.) to lead key initiatives.
  • Support activities related to IP, Product, and Compliance as needed.
  • Create forms, playbooks, and training to improve consistency, execution speed, risk mitigation, and scalability.
  • Develop and implement scalable and sustainable legal operations processes, programs and tools to support the legal team’s efficient delivery of services to the broader company.
  • Proactively manage other duties that may arise as part of a small legal team in a high growth start-up.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Qualification to practice law in Japan (Bengoshi), or equivalent legal qualification; ideally J.D. or LL.M. degree, with admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Fluency in both English and Japanese (written and verbal), with the ability to operate effectively in a bilingual business environment.
  • Experience structuring, drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements, including software licenses, strategic partnerships, and joint development agreements.
  • Demeanor to thrive in a fast-paced sales focused environment, requiring exceptional organizational skills, juggling priorities, and adhering to strict deadlines.
  • 5+ years' of experience with the activities described above.

Nice to have:

  • Experience supporting cross-border transactions, particularly involving U.S., Japan and Korea-based stakeholders.
  • Experience working in the Japanese office of a U.S. or multinational company, or advising multinational clients in a law firm or in-house environment.
  • Experience with some combination of law firm and in-house work.
  • Computer science, engineering, or other technical background.
  • Prior experience in technology, automotive, mobility, or other deep-tech industries.

Compensation at Applied Intuition for eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Note that benefits are subject to change and may vary based on jurisdiction of employment.

Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will additionally be influenced by a variety of factors including experience, credentials & certifications, educational attainment, skill level requirements, interview performance, and the level and scope of the position.
