Scout is building a new way to see and operate in space: with a new paradigm of data empowering every satellite to make space safer. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in the implementation and testing of our advanced algorithms supporting spacecraft autonomy and space object detection, tracking, and classification from optical payloads.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, architect, and develop software systems, pipelines, and infrastructure
  • Guide best practices, design patterns, and coding standards
  • Collaborate with team members & perform code reviews
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Make key strategic technical decisions and assist with the estimation of timelines and costs.
  • Maintain and improve technical documentation
  • Enhance development processes, tools, and techniques
  • Balance management of technical debt for existing systems with strategic project execution
  • Maintain high standards of excellence across all projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be eligible to hold a clearance
  • Proficiency in C++, with experience developing and building C++ applications using CMake
  • 5+ years of professional experience in software development with a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or STEM discipline; OR 7+ years of professional experience in software development in lieu of a degree
  • Expert proficiency in Python
  • Experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines for C++ projects using tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, or Azure Pipelines
  • Knowledge of version control systems (Git, SVN) and best practices for branching, merging, and code reviews
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with DO-178 standards for software development in safety-critical systems
  • Experience with continuous testing, integration, and deployment of embedded or real-time systems
  • Experience with migrating/refactoring monolithic code into a cloud-based microservice architecture
  • Experience building and deploying Docker images.
  • Experience with embedded systems, FPGAs, GPU programming.

Our positions are based in the Reston, Virginia area, with much of our team operating in a hybrid or remote fashion. Our preference is for candidates in or around this area (or willing to relocate) as we scale our facilities and engineering team and provide more opportunities to work and collaborate in-person. Remote employees will be required to travel for onsite work and in-person meetings.
