Software Engineer, Infrastructure Automation

Simplesense builds, deploys, and sustains the Installation Resilience Platform that enables mission operators to rapidly adapt and respond. The Platform protects critical infrastructure from cyber attack while unlocking previously siloed information to monitor, diagnose, and improve response times to incidents. Our adversaries rapidly adopt the latest technology: we help defense users respond in kind.

Simplesense is a non-traditional defense contractor and prime on the Air Force's Installation Resilience Operations Command and Control (IROC) program, which is now expanding to five additional Air Force, Space Force, and Army installations from the one prototype installation, Tyndall Air Force Base.

Our team combines over 100 years of direct mission experience solving hard problems with 50 years of technical expertise deploying DevSecOps, cybersecurity, and cloud infrastructure, giving us a deep appreciation for our customers’ mission and end users’ priorities. We build for scale, architecting and prioritizing technical work for long-term sustainability.

Simplesense's engineering team drives innovation by developing and integrating advanced technologies to deliver real-time solutions that enhance security, operational efficiency, and data fusion into mission critical systems. We design and implement secure infrastructure systems, including operational technology (OT) gateways, cloud-based analytics, and automated monitoring, to streamline data flow and enable actionable insights. By focusing on resilience, scalability, and continuous improvement, our engineering team creates robust platforms that empower decision-making and mission success. Collaboration across public and private systems ensures our solutions bridge critical gaps, optimize resource use, and meet the demands of our customers.

Simplesense is looking for an Infrastructure Automation Software Engineer to join our remote, US-based team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and developing Infrastructure-as-Code network architectures within our Installation Resilience Platform codebase. You will develop IaC templates and scripts to deploy infrastructure resources into our platform environments. This position offers the chance to work with a unique blend of cloud technology and real-world mission-critical systems in a fully remote setting. Occasional travel for team meetings or on-site support will be required.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional experience in software, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering, including hands-on cloud infrastructure deployment and automation in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure automation and configuration management (Infrastructure-as-Code) using tools such as CloudFormation, AWS CDK, Terraform, Ansible, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience automating system configurations and deployments with scripting languages such as Python and Bash; PowerShell experience is a plus.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and development workflows (using tools like GitHub, GitHub Actions, and version control branching strategies).
  • Proficiency in AWS cloud services and architecture (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, etc.). Experience designing IAM solutions for cloud and on-prem (integration with tools like Active Directory and Okta) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure monitoring and logging tools for ensuring system health and performance.
  • Comfortable performing operations in Linux environments (strong Linux shell/terminal skills).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Security certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Cloud+ (or willingness to obtain one within a short time of hire).
  • AWS Associate-level certification in Solutions Architect, Developer, or DevOps is a plus.
  • Experience designing and deploying hybrid or multi-cloud network architectures and topologies is a plus.
  • Experience deploying and managing infrastructure using containers and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, etc) is a plus.
  • VMware Certified Professional - VMware Cloud Foundation Architect certification or equivalent work experience is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a DoD NIPR account and Common Access Card (CAC).

Core Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC): Design, implement, and maintain scalable, reusable IaC templates and modules to automate the deployment of cloud infrastructure and resources (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, etc.).
  • CI/CD Pipeline Development: Develop, optimize, and maintain CI/CD pipelines (using GitHub Actions) for infrastructure code and application deployments.
  • Automation Scripting and Tooling: Write and maintain automation scripts and tools (in Python, Bash, PowerShell, etc.) to eliminate manual processes. Automate tasks such as environment setup, software installation, configuration enforcement (using Ansible playbooks or similar), and routine maintenance.
  • Monitoring and Reliability: Set up observability, monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to track the health, performance, and security of infrastructure. Respond to or coordinate responses to infrastructure incidents as needed, performing root cause analysis and preventative measures.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with software engineers, data engineers, cybersecurity, and operations teams to align infrastructure provisioning with application needs and mission objectives. Participate in architectural discussions, providing input on infrastructure capabilities and constraints. Ensure that infrastructure changes are communicated and coordinated across teams.
  • Mentorship and Team Development: Mentor junior engineers and new team members in infrastructure best practices, coding standards for automation, and DevSecOps culture. Contribute to peer reviews of code and designs. Foster an environment of continuous improvement by sharing knowledge and leading by example in problem-solving and adherence to quality.
